Key Figures from OJ Simpson’s Murder Trial Speak Out After His Passing.
Prominent figures associated with O.J. Simpson’s infamous murder trial have responded to his death at the age of 76 after battling cancer.
The former football star was accused of and ultimately acquitted of the brutal 1994 killings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in what was famously known as the “Trial of the Century.”
Carl Douglas, one of the attorneys on Simpson’s defense team in the Los Angeles murder case, reflected on his time representing Simpson: “He was one of the most famous clients that I have ever represented in my 44-year career. I expect our names will forever be linked together in some way. My sincere condolences go out to his four children. May he rest in peace.”
Alan Dershowitz, part of Simpson’s legal “Dream Team” advisors, shared with The Associated Press that Simpson “played a significant role in bringing to light racial divisions in America.”
“His trial also shed light on police corruption within certain officials of the Los Angeles Police Department,” he mentioned to The AP. “He will leave behind a complex legacy. A remarkable athlete. Many believe he was guilty. Others believe he was innocent.”
Kato Kaelin, who was staying at Simpson’s house at the time of the murders and later became a key witness during the trial, offered his condolences on Thursday to Simpson’s children and expressed his “love and compassion” to the families of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman.
“Nicole was a beacon of light that burned bright. May we never forget her,” Kaelin said in a video statement posted on [platform X].
Despite being acquitted of murder charges, Simpson was found liable for wrongful death in a civil trial in 1997. He was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages to the Brown and Goldman families.
Attorney Gloria Allred, who once represented Nicole Brown Simpson’s family, reflected on the outcome, saying, “I feel that the system failed Nicole Brown Simpson and failed battered women everywhere.” She added, “I don’t mourn for O.J. Simpson. I do mourn for Nicole Brown Simpson and her family, and they should be remembered.”
In 2006, a controversial book titled “If I Did It,” purportedly a “hypothetical” confession based on interviews with O.J. Simpson and ghostwritten by another author, was set to be released alongside a TV special featuring Simpson. However, both were canceled following widespread condemnation. Subsequently, the rights to the book were awarded to the family of Ron Goldman, who retitled and published it as “If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer.”
Following Simpson’s recent death, the Goldman family expressed a mix of emotions. In a statement to ABC News, they conveyed that Simpson’s passing brings forth complex feelings and serves as a reminder that the journey through grief is not straightforward.
Kim Goldman and Fred Goldman, Ron Goldman’s sister and father, jointly expressed their sentiments: “For three decades we tirelessly pursued justice for Ron and Nicole, and despite a civil judgment and his confession in ‘If I Did It,’ the hope for true accountability has ended.”
They further emphasized their commitment to advocating for victims’ rights and ensuring their voices are heard, both in and out of the courtroom. “Despite his death, the mission continues; there’s always more to be done,” they affirmed. They concluded by thanking everyone who has kept their family and Ron in their thoughts over the last 30 years.
Marcia Clark, the lead prosecutor in O.J. Simpson’s murder trial, offered her condolences to Simpson’s family in a brief statement to ABC News.
Simpson’s family announced that he passed away on Wednesday while surrounded by his children and grandchildren, requesting privacy during their time of mourning.
In May 2023, Simpson shared a video on a platform, then known as Twitter, revealing his battle with cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. He did not specify the type of cancer he was facing.
